If you are considering having male breast reduction surgery, there are several questions to ask yourself in order to determine the best time to plan for the procedure.
Are you healthy?
To have your breast reduction surgery completed successfully, you need to be of average weight and health. The healing process will be greatly affected by the condition of your health. Likewise, the surgery is best performed when your skin is healthy and taut.
Have you spoken to your primary care physician about your condition?
Sometimes gynecomastia is caused or exacerbated by underlying medical conditions or certain medications. The following are examples of some drugs and conditions that have influenced male breast tissue growth:
In some cases, enlarged male breasts aren’t a result of gynecomastia at all, but are the result of a particular diet or of obesity. To be sure that gynecomastia is the issue and is treatable in your specific situation, talk to your primary doctor first.
Can you take a couple of weeks off of work?
After having gynecomastia treatment, you will need one to two weeks of recovery time. You also may need to stay in the hospital overnight, depending on your specific situation. Otherwise, you may need someone to stay with you and to help take care of you while you heal. You will need to plan ahead accordingly.
Do you have any bad habits to quit?
If you smoke or consume alcohol, you will need to quit several months before the procedure. Keep this in mind before you schedule an appointment with a plastic surgeon, as it will be one of the first questions asked and, if you haven’t quit yet, may affect how soon you can have the surgery.

For many men, enlarged breasts are the source of extreme insecurity. A condition known as gynecomastia classifies the over sized or enlarged breasts that are seen in men as often as 40 to 60 percent. This condition can develop at any age, and is often the results of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or certain medications. Male breast reduction works to flatten the chest, and restore a more masculine contour to the pectoral muscles. In extreme cases of gynecomastia where the skin and nipples may have been over stretched, the nipple and areola will be surgically re-positioned after excess skin has been excised.
Male Breast Reduction Candidates:
Have over sized breasts that do not respond to diet and exercise
Are healthy, non-smokers
Have realistic expectations and a positive outlook for the results of the pocedure
Maintain a healthy, normal weight
Suffer insecurity from the size of their breasts
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Most procedures involve liposuction of the breast areas to remove excess fat
Depending on the size of the breasts, skin may be removed
If skin is removed, the scars are often hidden in natural, less conspicuous folds
Some procedures combine liposuction and skin excision
When skin excision is performed, the nipple and areola are re-positioned to lend to a more natural-looking position
Is Plastic Surgery Just for Women?
This statement is false, in fact annually men are increasingly considering and undergoing plastic surgery procedures nationwide
According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 22,638 male breast reduction procedures were performed in 2013
ASAPS research found a 273 percent increase of men undergoing cosmetic procedures from 1997 to 2013

Chin augmentation is one of the few plastic surgery procedures that are on the rise among both women and men. This procedure reshapes the chin through the placement of an implant, which serves to provide a harmonious balance to the rest of the facial features.
Below are several of the most common reasons that men and women receive chin implants.
Strengthen the jaw line. Depending on their bone structure and development, some people naturally have what is referred to as a “weak” jaw line. This can mean that the chin does not protrude enough, a condition that is sometimes referred to as a “recessed chin”. This concern is more common among men than women, however, a significantly recessed chin can make women unhappy with their appearance as well. In this case, a chin augmentation can bring the chin line forward and improve the overall look of the jaw.
Balance out facial features. The jaw line and chin area play a large role in making the face appear balanced and in proportion. The bottom portion of the face serves as the base and aesthetically “ties” the rest of the facial features together. If the chin is not in proportion to the rest of one’s features, or if it is noticeably asymmetrical, a chin implant can make a substantial improvement. Both men and women undergo the chin augmentation procedure in order to make their facial features more proportional.
Accompany a nose job. Another way that a chin implant serves to bring balance to one’s appearance is when it is combined with a nose job, or rhinoplasty. In some cases, a large nose can be further downplayed by a chin enhancement, as moving the chin line forward helps to make the nose appear to be less pronounced.
The size of the chin can magnify or minimize the perceived size of the nose and vice versa. Therefore, it’s vital that a board-certified surgeon performs your procedures to make sure that the chin implant and/or nose job are proportional and complimentary in size to one another. Last week, ABC News published an interesting article on a growing new trend in the world of cosmetic medicine: couples exploring plastic surgery together. While certain procedures have long been associated only with women, it seems now that a growing number of husbands are joining with their wives and finding out what cosmetic surgery can do for them!
“Heather and David Robertson have done everything together for 18 years,” reports ABC, “so when she decided to go under the knife, he didn’t think twice about doing it, too.” And, while Heather and David were both looking into plastic surgery, they came in with different concerns. David was dealing with a bothersome “double chin” and opted for a surgical chin lift. For Heather, however, it was all about combating the effects of childbirth. “…We have had four children together and you know it takes quite a toll on our bodies,” David explained to ABC News. “So if anybody deserves to get a tummy tuck, I think she deserves to get one done.”
Following the procedures, the couple seems to be satisfied. “Six weeks of healing later and the extra skin on David’s chin is gone,” reports ABC. “Heather’s baby fat after her four children is non-existent.”
Male Plastic Surgery on the Rise
The recent ABC News piece highlights a shifting attitude in the world of plastic surgery. What were procedures only popular among the “fairer sex,” are now finding an ever-growing male audience. Just how many men are choosing plastic surgery each year? According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were over 1.19 million male cosmetic procedures performed in 2011, alone. That represents a remarkable 9% of all cosmetic procedures performed in the country. So, which procedures are men choosing?
Here are the Top 3 Cosmetic Surgical Procedures Among Men, based on recent ASPS data:
Nose Reshaping: Nose reshaping – also known as “rhinoplasty” – comes in as the number-one male cosmetic surgery in the US. The procedure aims to correct a nose that appears large, wide, has a bump or appears crooked.
Eyelid Surgery: Also, known as “blepharoplasty,” an eyelid lift works to combat the appearance of drooping, tired-looking eyes. During the procedure, excess fat, skin and muscle are removed from the upper and lower eyelids.
Liposuction: The go-to treatment for stubborn, exercise-resistant fat, liposuction is used to shape and recontour the body. Common liposuction sites include the midsection, love handles, buttocks, thighs, chest and more.
