What is a Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a simple, effective way to restore a youthful look to your eyes. Opting for blepharoplasty surgery is a highly personal decision. This procedure removes the pockets of fat and loose skin and muscle from areas around the eyes. But the areas targeted for this procedure depend on your particular needs, and it may be performed on the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both.
Upper eyelid surgery trims excess skin that imparts a tired appearance, and can even affect your vision. With this excess trimmed your plastic surgeon then lifts and tightens the remaining skin to give it a smoother appearance. Scarring is virtually invisible because the incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid.
Lower eyelid surgery removes bags and fat deposits underneath the eyes. Incisions are made under the lower eyelashes, and in many cases inside the eyelid itself. The excess fat, muscle and skin are removed, achieving a firmer, more youthful-looking aesthetic to the eyes.
While not required, many patients combine other procedures, like chemical peels or BOTOX®, with a blepharoplasty to eliminate crow’s feet and sagging eyebrows.
What is the Recovery Process for a Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgeries are relatively simple and usually under local anesthesia. The length of the plastic surgery will depend on which eyelid procedure you have selected to meet your goals, but most only take one to three hours to complete.
Some patients may experience some temporary numbness and discomfort around the incisions. Many patients do not feel much pain following surgery; to keep them comfortable, they are often prescribed oral medication to relieve any pain they may experience.
Follow our cosmetic plastic surgeon’s instructions for post-operative care; you’ll be well on the way to smooth recovery. Normal activities can be resumed within two days of your plastic surgery, but strenuous activities should be avoided for two to three weeks after the procedure. Dr. Lalla will review the recovery process and advise you when you are healed sufficiently for various activities. A small amount of puffiness around the eyes may persist for several months after eyelid surgery, but these after effects will eventually disappear, leaving your eyes with a more youthful and vigorous appearance.
