What is a Rhinoplasty?

A Rhinoplasty—also called a ‘nose job’—is a common plastic surgery procedure that reshapes, reduces, or augments the nose. Rhinoplasty may be performed for functional rather than cosmetic reasons as well. Combining nose reshaping with septoplasty or endoscopic sinus surgery can effectively treat breathing problems, such as those caused by a deviated septum.

Dr. Sanjay Lalla is the BEST NJ Plastic Surgeon! He was referred to me by a previous patient who couldn’t say enough good things about his work. Not only was Dr. Lalla a delight, but I also have never come across a more professional, yet kind and caring staff! From the first person to answer the phone to the Nurse Practitioner, Gina and of course Dr. Lalla! When you are making permanent changes to your body you need to be really comfortable with that person, he did just that and more! Plus all the little things you don’t think about, they do and make everything about your procedure so easy and comfortable! Thank you again, Dr. Lalla and staff, I feel like a new and improved woman!

Why Should I Get a Rhinoplasty?

Patients seek rhinoplasties for a variety of cosmetic and structural reasons. For example, if you have nose asymmetry or a deviated septum, you may have issues breathing. A rhinoplasty can correct the nose structure to ensure the proper airflow. Aesthetic concerns such as a large or wide nose, humps, bumps, depressions, drooping or upturned nasal tips, unsatisfactory nostril shape, or an unflattering angle between the nose and the mouth are common reasons patients have rhinoplasty surgery. If you are interested in the rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Lalla will help you achieve the results you seek.

Rhinoplasty Procedure Overview

Dr. Lalla wants you to feel comfortable and confident going into your plastic surgery—he takes the time to get to know you and thoroughly answer your questions. During your initial consultation, Dr. Lalla will carefully assess your nose while listening to your concerns and mapping out your aesthetic desires. Through 3D renderings, Dr. Lalla will then explain your rhinoplasty options before recommending the procedure best suited for you.

Rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia lasting 1 to 2 hours. There are two methods for performing a rhinoplasty: open and closed. Dr. Lalla performs open rhinoplasty with an incision across the columella (the structure between your two nostrils), while closed rhinoplasty places incisions inside the nose. Although closed nose jobs offer no visible scarring, many plastic surgeons prefer an open rhinoplasty because there is greater access to the overall nose structure. Depending on your needs, Dr. Lalla will decide which surgery to perform.

After your rhinoplasty surgery, you may experience bruises and swelling around your eyes and nose. Dr. Lalla will use splints and packing material to support the new structure of your nose for the first couple of days. We advise patients to be gentle around the nose (cautious nose-blowing and teeth-brushing) and avoid strenuous exercise for at least a week. Most patients return to work within a week. However, it may take up to one year to see complete results.

Am I a Candidate for a Rhinoplasty?

Anyone unhappy with the appearance of their nose may be a viable candidate for a rhinoplasty. Facial growth must finish before electing for surgery, meaning patients under 13 rarely qualify. Additionally, patients should not smoke, must maintain good overall health, and have realistic expectations for surgical outcomes.
