Your Breast Augmentation Questions, Answered

A breast augmentation procedure can be done for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes. Women can get breast implants to create a fuller or more balanced look. Others choose to get a breast augmentation surgery after a mastectomy for breast cancer or for other reconstructive reasons. If you are considering getting a breast augmentation for cosmetic reasons, you’ve likely had some of the following questions come to mind:

What types of breast implants are there?

Saline and silicone are the two basic types of breast implants available. Saline implants are made of a silicone shell and are filled with sterile salt water either prior to or during the implant surgery. Silicone implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a plastic gel. While many women say silicone implants feel more real, they also present a larger risk if they leak. Implants come in many different sizes and there are pros and cons associated with either choice.

How much does a breast augmentation cost?

The cost of getting a breast augmentation varies depending on the type of implant you choose, the doctor, and your location. Generally speaking, an operation is roughly $5,000-$10,000 dollars. It is important to know that your insurance will likely not cover a breast augmentation procedure if it is for cosmetic reasons.

How old do I need to be to get a breast augmentation?

A woman’s breasts may continue to develop until she reaches her early 20’s. With that in mind, the FDA requires that a woman be at least 18 years of age before getting a breast augmentation surgery with saline implants, and at least 22 years old if they want silicone implants.

How long does a breast augmentation procedure take?

A breast augmentation surgery will typically last 1-2 hours. You will be given general anesthesia which will allow you to “sleep” during the procedure without pain.
